PHOTOGRAPHY
Dave Gould’s North Carolina
friends tease him about growing up in northern New Jersey; but it wasn't
that bad. From the age of eight, Dave stayed busy taking pictures and
painting with oil colors. “My camera of choice was a 1951 German-made
Kodak Retina that my father gave me. I was the only young person that
would repeatedly enroll in the local evening school photography
classes”. At the early age of 10, he was taking pictures and
learning darkroom techniques with adults 3 times his age. During summer
days, Dave would walk 2 miles to the next town and take oil painting
classes at the local art/frame shop. Dave feels that this variety of influences has
broadened his artistic view of nature.
About the hand-colored photographs:
It all
starts with a stunning 8x10 black and white photograph
that is first printed on archival photographic paper. Then,
the print is sprayed with a special clear coat paint to
allow the oil paints to blend and adhere properly with the
print. Once completely dry (2-3 days), the art is
meticulously painted by hand with an original set of
photographic oil paints from the 40's (see pict). Once
painted, the art is then left to dry for at least a week
before it is then sprayed with a final coat of clear coat
matte finish spray to protect it for a lifetime of
beautiful color. This process dates back to the beginning
of photography. Your photograph will be a unique,
exquisitely soft and graceful piece of artwork ready to
mat and frame to your desire immediately upon receiving.
“I have combined both my love of oil painting and photography
into a successful career. I particularly enjoy taking pictures from the
front of my kayak. Kayaking from desolate lakes and ocean bays gives me
endless opportunities”. Before the invention of the
color photograph, photographers would take special oil paints and add
color to black and white pictures. “They remind me of a past era. When I
look at one of my black and white photographs and then add a little color,
the photograph takes on a totally different feeling.” When Dave
discovered hand-coloring, he realized that "by adding oils to a
photograph, I could blend – literally – my love for both art and
photography." Dave fell in love with not only the concept of painting
pictures, but the artistic freedom it gave him. Dave currently works on
merging the latest advances in digital photography with the traditional
art of hand-coloring. Dave Gould is now 34 years old and alternates living
in NC with traveling the country conquering his artistic dreams.
"I am in charge of the entire
process, from start to finish. Creating a fine art print is time consuming, but only by doing it this
way can I be sure that the original vision I had for each picture is
carried out."
